City of Whittlesea · Nillumbik · Mitchell ShireWhat we cut
Paddocks, blocks, fence lines and breaks.
- Paddock slashing on hobby farms and grazing blocks, before the grass cures into a fire load.
- House blocks and lifestyle blocks mowed or slashed, as a one-off tidy-up or booked each season.
- Fire breaks cut along the inside of your boundaries to the width your council asks for, then around the house, sheds and driveway.
- Fence lines, laneways and roadside frontages, including the corners other operators skip.
- A dated photo record of the finished job, so you can show the council it was done and when.
What is the Fire Danger Period?
The Fire Danger Period is the stretch of the year when fire restrictions apply in your area. The CFA declares it municipality by municipality, based on how dry the local country is, so it can start on a different date in Whittlesea than in Nillumbik or Mitchell Shire. While it is on, burning off needs a permit and other fire restrictions apply. The CFA publishes the start and end dates for each municipality on its website.
For a landholder it is the practical deadline: the grass should be down and the breaks in before it starts.
What does a fire prevention notice mean?
A fire prevention notice is a formal direction from your council, issued under Victoria's fire laws, telling the owner or occupier to reduce a fire hazard on the property by a set date. It usually follows an inspection that found long grass or other fuel. The notice says what to do and by when.
If the work is not done by the date, the council can fine you and can send its own contractor to do the work and bill you for it. Many councils send a reminder letter before the season, which is not the notice itself. Either way, the fix is the same: get the block cut to what the letter or notice asks.
City of Whittlesea, 2026-27
What Whittlesea's letter asks for this season.
- Grass kept down to 10 cm from November to March.
- On rural properties in a grassland area, a fire break of at least 35 metres from every boundary.
- A Fire Prevention Works Form if you are cutting hay or running stock instead. We can be the Land Manager on that form: we map the paddocks, draw the works plan, lodge it, then do the slashing.
These are the City of Whittlesea's rules. Nillumbik, Mitchell Shire and other councils set their own, and they can differ by property. Tell us your council and send a photo of your letter, and we will cut to exactly what it says.
How a job runs.
- Call, text photos of the block, or send the form.
- We look at the block, read your council letter, and give you a written quote.
- We cut on the agreed date and photograph the finished job.
- If you want, we book you in again next season so it never gets away.
Costed by the hour, or a fixed price for the block after a look.
The quote is the price.
Fair questions.
Get the block cut before the grass cures.
